What do you do when your school, library, or local community has banned books about diverse characters or plots? You do the same thing we do with just about every roadblock these days -- hit the internet! You may be surprised to find that there are free, virtual libraries you can access anywhere with an internet connection. Many of the free, online libraries focus on classic literature and books commonly taught in schools, but you'll still find a few that offer children's books and newer works of fiction -- it just might take a little extra digging.
The resource section of this website now has two articles listing online libraries that you might enjoy.
The libraries listed in the articles above are great resources even if your community isn't suffering a book ban. These libraries are 100% online and don't require a library card (although some may require you to make a free account), so there are no strings attached to using these libraries. Some offer teaching tools for educators or conversation starters for book clubs.
Because these libraries are free (and often unsubsidized) they may not carry everything under the sun, but you can access thousands of books through these resources. Happy reading!
